Central Co-op has joined the UK co-operative movement in backing the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Myanmar Earthquake Appeal, providing vital support to those affected by the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on the 28th of March.
The powerful quake has caused catastrophic devastation across the country. More than 17 million people have been affected, 3,000 lives have been lost, and many thousands more remain missing. Survivors are in urgent need of life-saving essentials such as food, clean water, shelter and medical care. Roads, hospitals, schools and critical infrastructure have been destroyed, leaving people cut off from help.
In response, Central Co-op has donated £10,000 to the DEC appeal. This donation has been raised through the Society’s Carrier Bag Levy, a fund dedicated to supporting urgent causes both locally and globally.
The Society is now inviting its Members and customers to contribute to the appeal, with the reassurance that every pound donated will go even further as the UK government is matching public donations up to £5 million.
Andy Seddon, Society Secretary at Central Co-op, said: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. Communities in Myanmar urgently need support, and we’re proud to join co-operatives across the UK in responding to this humanitarian crisis. We encourage our Members and customers to give what they can to help the Disasters Emergency Committee reach more people with the aid they so desperately need.”
DEC charities are already on the ground in Myanmar, working tirelessly to reach the most vulnerable in remote and devastated areas. But the scale of the crisis means more funds are urgently needed to provide critical relief.
Please consider donating to the DEC Myanmar Earthquake Appeal today and help deliver hope in the face of devastation.
