On the 15th of September, Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society officially became part of Central Co-op, securing its future after more than 150 years of service to communities across Essex.

The move safeguards Chelmsford Star’s heritage and local identity, while opening up new investment opportunities through a larger co-operative. Membership benefits and community support, including the Chelmsford Star Community Fund and Pride of Essex Awards, continue unchanged.

To mark the transfer, Central Co-op hosted a “Get to Know Central Co-op” day at Chelmsford City Racecourse. Colleagues reflected on what they value most about Chelmsford Star, including teamwork, community and strong Member connections, and shared ideas for the future, such as local product ranges, improving instore technology and increasing colleague recognition.

Debbie Robinson, CEO of Central Co-op, said: “It was a privilege to be with colleagues in Essex on transfer day, hearing directly from them about what matters most. Their passion for community, Members and each other really shines through. Together we will build on those strengths, ensuring securing stability, investing in colleagues and delivering more value for Members across the region.”

Barry Wood, CEO of Chelmsford Star Co-op, said: “Chelmsford Star has always been proud of its place at the heart of the Essex community. Joining Central Co-op allows us to protect that heritage while continuing to support our colleagues, Members and local communities for many more years to come.”

Chelmsford Star, which was founded in 1867 by local iron foundry workers, officially transferred to Central Co-op on the 15th of September 2025.
